These techniques of body/mind medicine are highly effective because they accomplish several important tasks. They help to promote healing in the body by producing the “relaxation response”, a physiological state discovered by Herbert Benson, MD of Harvard Medical School. During the relaxation response our heart and respiratory rates decrease, blood pressure lowers and immune functioning increases.  It is the antidote to the stress we experience and necessary to maintain balance.
When utterly relaxed, we enter into a state similar to when we catch ourselves daydreaming. While in this state, we are more receptive to sensory messages that mobilize our body’s resources and responses.  With Reiki, our body can then tap into its innate ability to heal.  With guided imagery, creative imagery engages all of our senses help us to bring about physical, behavioral and emotional changes.

At the foundation of Life in Balance is the importance of learning to understand and care for the whole person, and how feeling empowered enables an individual to take the appropriate steps towards meeting personal wellness goals and regaining the necessary balance of mind, body and spirit.
The Lotus Flower
The flower repeated throughout the print material of Life in Balance is a lotus flower.  It is one of the most ancient symbols of our planet. Although the lotus means different things to different cultures and religions, at the foundation of its appeal is that despite resting immersed in mud and murky water each evening, the lotus rises through the mud each morning to reach the water’s surface and open its petals to the sun.  It appears untouched by impurity, symbolizing the purity of heart and mind.  The tenacity and strength demonstrated by the lotus can also represent a hard time in life that has been overcome.
